This gorgeous room is the first thing you see when entering the Wallace home. It is warm, inviting, and interesting all at the same time which makes it perfect for entertaining guests on a regular basis.
Susan and Dolan Wallace have been clients of mine for almost 8 years. We met while I was working for a former employer and was involved in a kitchen and bath remodel in their previous home. During those 8 years, my career changed and evolved into what we all know now as Yeager Design and Interiors. Susan and Dolan in the meantime, purchased a new home in Huntington, West Virginia and decided to get back in touch with me for a bit of help to make it their own. I was so excited to hear from Susan again and we immediately started making plans for them to come into our showroom as well as a scheduled consultation in their new home. Over the next few visits, we decided to focus on their formal living area and connected dining room. The couple had a few pieces they really loved but needed the bulk of their space finished with new furniture and accessories. I assured them that they had come to the right place!
As you can see from the included photos, the Wallace’s are not afraid of color! They had an existing red floral rug, a striped neutral love seat and a floral-patterned chair and ottoman that needed to be brought together and unified with colorful accessories. By finding them the perfect piece of art that included all of their favorite colors, we were able to spring board further into the design by pulling in other hues of red, like the red leather ottoman, as well as multi tonal blues in teal, turquoise and aqua. We also provided them with semi-custom window treatments that would give the room warmth and a three-dimensional effect with their neutral tone on tone stripe.
This dining room is a chic and casual setting that surely will be used more than a formal dining room would be. Its comfortable seating and openness to the other rooms of the house create a relaxed vibe for all who come to enjoy.
When it came to the adjacent dining room, Susan and Dolan were in need of a dining table that sat up to 8 people, a new light fixture, a large storage buffet and finishing touches. They kept their china cabinet from their previous dining set, but decided that mixing and not matching the rest of the finishes would give the room more personality. Susan was absolutely in love with a dining table I had featured in a previous article. She knew that particular table was the one she wanted and was ready for me to piece together a design centered around it. By incorporating slip covered upholstered captain chairs and similar toned side chairs, and a machine made colorful rug we were able to tie in the living room accent colors and add even darker hues of blue for the wall art. Our new chandelier was a unique gold and silver mercury glass pendant that created a warm glow over the new dining design. The final finishing touch for the table was a custom arrangement I put together that would surely be a conversation starter when entertaining.
This vintage buffet gives a one of a kind feel to this dining area. Its mercury glass panels and custom wood finish are exquisite while being down to earth for its worn quality. The bark wood mirror and metallic accessories pair perfectly to accomplish this rustic chic look.
After revealing the finished design to the couple, I got to sit down with Susan and ask her a few questions about our process together. Here, is an excerpt from our interview:
Elizabeth: Rather than just buying the furniture from our showroom, why did you rely so heavily on the design service part?
Susan: I always know what I like, I just lack vision of putting it all together. Plus, I am always short on time, so it was amazing to be able to walk out of the room and a few hours later come back in and have the entire design not only done, but done right.
When I think about my design relationship with the Wallace’s it makes me smile. The growth in their style from 8 years ago to now is tremendous. They have departed from their former ways of matching each and every wood and fabric that came into their house and have evolved into an eclectic transitional couple with a beautiful home ready to entertain.
